Founded in 1825, the Connecticut Historical Society is one of the oldest historical repositories in the country with a nationally-renowned collection numbering over 3.5 million items. Located in the West End of Hartford, housed in what was once the home of an inventor and businessman, this lovely and quirky 1928 building retains many original features including the home’s elevator and central vacuum system!
Attractive, colorful, modern exhibits bring out the wonderful stories of Connecticut’s people, places and remarkable moments. Our signature exhibit, Making Connecticut, provides an overview of 400+ years of daily life and innovation. CHS’s collection of more than 60 inn and tavern signs from the 18th and 19th centuries is the largest and most spectacular in the country.
The Connecticut Historical Society is fully handicapped accessible.
